It was cooler than last Saturday, with overcast skies and a threat of rain, but still hot. There was a breeze to keep things cool, but it was also a headwind to fight at times. Chris was busy and Root didn’t respond to any of the ride mail during the week, so I thought it was going to be just Jeff, Sara, and myself again. Pulling into the parking lot, I saw that Paul and Danny were going to join us again! There was a brief discussion on the ride course, and we decided on the mystery hills since there was less climbing than the regular loop.
We duplicated the 02 June ride, except for a brief exploration around the grassy spot coming out of the first valley, and a brief foray up a singletrack neat the fenceline on the third ridge that looks like a potential continuation of the trail system, possibly connecting to Waimano. Oh, and of course we didn’t go down the dead-end on the fourth ridge. We took the turn down the singletrack leading to the downhill groove, but turned right at the yump and returned to the main road along an overgrown contour doubletrack along the face of the hillside.
Conditions were slightly damp from rain in the morning, but not slippery or slick. traction was good and there was no packing until the very end. On the third ridge there were a few spots with standing water, so it probably rained in the previous 6-hours or so. Danny said “rain”, so we got drizzled on during the bar break at the top! The loose climb up to the farm was damp and sticky, clogging the tires and laying a bed of mortar for the loose gravel on the road to stick into.
