After watching the disappointing first half of the Hawaii-Georgia Sugar Bowl game, I started flipping back and forth to the one-day-late KIKU-TV telecast of the Kohaku Uta-Gassen. There wasn’t anything good per-se, but it reinforced some judgements that I had from before:
BoA sucks. She can’t sing live. She was way off key. The only reason she is popular is because she is a novelty foreigner. Her time is long over – she can go back home and sing off-key in her own language now.
Hamasaki Ayumi sucks. She dresses funny and she is off-key live and recorded. She is so bad that they can’t even fix her pitch digitally in post-production for her CD’s. I guess Ueto Aya’s shelf life has expired, since she wasn’t there for Ayu to cast invisible daggers at.
Dreams Come True are technically astounding. The singer is really good – wide vocal range and perfect pitch. Too bad their material sucks…
Kouda Kumi was surprisingly good. She was on-key for her entire song, even though it was a unchallenging song with little variation in pitch or melody. It was so good, that it almost seemed like she was lip-synching. I hadn’t expected much from her to begin with, so maybe that explains my pleasant surprise.
The Hello! Project girls are getting more numerous and even younger. They are also being recruited from the same general physical architype, as I can’t differentiate them from each other anymore. Absolutely no good male acts… except for Mikawa Kenichi and Kitajima Saburo!
