After being reminded of the place that took over the old Rainbows Express location in Kakaako, We went by to Hank’s Haute Dogs for lunch. The interior is well-done-up, in neo-fusion-diner style, not unlike places like Kakaako Kitchen. Both the dining area and kitchen were bright and clean. The cashier quickly and courteously took my order and sent it back to the kitchen, where Hank himself was prepping orders. The place was crowded with mostly white-collar-types. About ten-minutes and half-a dozen orders later, I got my Brat and onion rings.
The Brat was served steamed on a poppy seed bun topped with Dijon mustard and sauerkraut. The flavor was very good, and the filing was firm and the casing crisp. It was a little pricy at $6.25 USD for the quantity. The onion rings were home made and very good. The seasoning was spot on – no ketchup or other adjuncts required. Again, the price was a little steep at $3.75 USD. The food quality was very good overall, but the value a bit poor. I was filled up just about right, but felt a little ripped-off after paying over $10 USD plus tax. I’d guess that part of that price goes into the overhead of the trendy rubber-stamped white paper bags and the custom offset-printed service boxes.
Recommended with reservations – the price is high for what you get. If around $15 USD for a dog, a side of fries or o-rings, and a specialty drink doesn’t bother you, then definitely go for it. I’ll go back, but not too often – unless I suddenly come into a pile of free money or something…
