38K For A Taurus?

As long as were talking cars, just saw news that the revived Ford Taurus name (Ford Five Hundred I guess didn’t generate enough sales) will be getting a SHO version that is going to sell for 37,900. Almost $40K for a Taurus?! Yes it’s twin turbo AWD, but still…. I don’t think STi’s will have to worry.

  • What the heck market do they expect to compete in with that? They should expend the technology on a sport-compact or the Mustang. They have SVT versions of the EDM Focus and EDM Fiesta on the other side of the pond – they should bring those here! Oh yeah, I forgot: “Americans hate hatchbacks and wagons, only sedans sell here.”

  • Not even a Yamaha engine, don’t think Yamaha is known for boosted engines. High rev norm aspirated is where they’re at, not American style.

  • Well, the Yamaha engine that “ended up” in the Taurus SHO was originally ordered by Ford for a mid-engined sport coupe that never materilaized, to compete with the Pontiac Fiero GT, Toyota MR2 turbo, and the proposed Nissan MID4. That market segment collapsed, and Ford was left with a bunch of engines, so with a new bell housing they adapted it into the Taurus. If you do a websearch, you can find a few pictures of the Ford sport coupe – there was a test mule built on a Escort EXP unibody, and a concept body model or two. I forget what the heck it was supposed to be called.
