wake up 2 c some snow

March 11- wake up 2 c some snow on ground. Forecast is advising very strong winds though, that is worrysome.
So is the poor performance of my iphone just due 2 being US model, or does the j ones exhibit just as terrible data service? If so no wonder it’s doing so poorly in Japan. Saw Softbank giving away iphone.

Had me worried, rain

Had me worried, rain as approach Kokusai, turn to snow in parking lot. Then blue sky. Up high was not bad at all. Lower get krusty. Snow started coming down, some pretty choice buttery smooth lines in the trees. On piste awful knee busting chunky. Good day, me happy, make up for Niseko. More snow coming down waiting for bus!

March 6, 2009- Arrived Narita ok

March 6, 2009- Arrived Narita ok, despite having the novelty of hearing your own names announced over the PA @ HNL. They wanted to know where the heck we were as everyone else was boarded! See what happens when u go too early & relax!
Tiny bit of culture shock into land of service, boarding flight to Sapporo, 1 girl to take ticket & feed into machine, another to hand back stub to u, another to man the terminal. Also need 2 get used to language where everyone assumes im fluent.

Nihon Bound, Finally

After I’m not sure how many years, finally making it to Hokkaido Japan in quest for some true powder. Perhaps a little late in the season, but there’s as good a chance on this trip as any before. Anyway, packed the new enourmous travel duffel with gear, more than I usually take. This will be a test of my iPhone in Japan and how well it’ll work as a Net device. I’ll attempt to use it to post to the blog. Be leaving in about 45 mins!

All I Wanted was a Pepsi

Dang, these AT&T people are all on drugs. All I wanted was an international data plan for my iPhone 3G. Two calls to AT&T & one to the Apple iphone support (he did a google search, not exactly a good indication) and they said my phone won’t work in Japan. Finally got someone to add the plan to my phone today.

Gringo-speak

This has been bothering me for the year it’s been running – Hey, you guys at ClearChannel who did the Jack in the Box bumper that runs on your Hawaii radio stations, “Chipotle” is pronounced “Cheh-pote-lay”, not “Chill-pole-tee”. WTF?! Idiots! Hire a voice-over guy who can actually pronounce the frickin’ words correctly!

Cookie Cutter

The irony of the Audi Q7 television commercial with the schoolkids not knowing which silver Lexus RX their respective parents occupies is probably lost on the unwashed North American buyer who doesn’t realize that the Q7 is just another rebadge job on a VW Touareg/Porsche Cayenne unibody.

38K For A Taurus?

As long as were talking cars, just saw news that the revived Ford Taurus name (Ford Five Hundred I guess didn’t generate enough sales) will be getting a SHO version that is going to sell for 37,900. Almost $40K for a Taurus?! Yes it’s twin turbo AWD, but still…. I don’t think STi’s will have to worry.

No Resale Value for You

Saw a nice, shiny previous-gen GTi in the used car lot at the Beretania Pfleuger. It was <$14K USD with aftermarket wheels, a body kit, and a big-ass FMIC. That's cheaper than a new base Yaris! Saw a 2008 Passat from the Ala Moana Boulevard dealer being fueled up at Tesoro for a test drive with a <$15K USD sticker on the windscreen. I guess Vee-dubs don't retain a lot of resale value.
