A few thursdays ago, Dave got the urge for pizza. And no, we did not want to settle for the ordinary Pizza But or Papa’s. And somewhere with beer is a definite plus. Fabio brought up J.J. Dolan’s, a less than year old eatery, located downtown on the fringe of Chinatown. He’d been there, but Dave and I haven’t yet. And they got beer. So it was off to find parking in the somewhat sketchy streets of downtown after dark. Kinda wish I didn’t have my bike in my car, should have left it at w0rk. Anyway, after scrounging up $6 in loose change to feed the parking ransom, I met the boys on Bethel Street.
Stepping in it had a pretty classic pub feel, and was decently busy for a weekday night. Just right, enough people to keep it lively, but empty enough where there was an empty table and service came around promptly. And inquiring with the server about their draft selection, though not incredibly large, did feature a Primo 50th Statehood Aniversary special ale. The revived Primo name available in bottles is nothing special, but have heard on tap is decent. This was a special limited brew, so we had to try it. I leave it to someone else to review it, I’ll just say we all liked it enough to have a second. It was nothing like the regular Primo.
So we were here for pizza, and a good thing, because that’s pretty much all they do. They got the idea right. Keep it to the point, and do it right. We order up two pies, one of their “signatures”, The Giacomo, and a classic Margherita. And in short order we are rewarded with two New York style pizzas. And a reward it is, the crust is a perfect blend of thin crust crisp with just the right touch of chewy. I can’t vouch for how authentic this is since I haven’t had a Pizza in New York, but this pizza was good. Between the three of us, we polished off the two pizzas and two beers each, and got away for under $25 each. We were all quite happy and satisfied!
4 out of 4 pie happy monkeys. Sorry folks, no pics.
Love that pizza. He’s the guy that used to make the pizza pies at Murphy’s a coupla years ago. We were bummed when he disappeared! I’m no afficionado, but have sampled quite a few pies in NYC and Brooklyn and that one at JJ’s is purty damned good! You won’t believe where Tracy and me had another great pizza pie…Merida, Mexico on the Yucatan peninsula!!! Really. Some little shit hole on some side street. Good stuff.
