Ookami Kodomo no Ame to Yuki – The Wolf Children Ame and Yuki

Just got back from the HIFF screening of this anime feature, just found out that it was actually the US premier, and I scored a free ticket and got in the door before the crowd to boot! Directed and story by Mamoru Hosoda who previously also directed and did the story for Summer Wars which I also saw. ANd previous to that he directed the most recent anime version of Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Lept Through Time) which was excellent.

Super brief synopsis, this is the story of the life of a mother and her two half wolf children she raises. The wolf husband/father figures so briefly in the story that you don’t know much about him, which in the end works perfectly for the story.

Beer Is Good – Sierra Nevada 2012 Tumbler, Autumn Brown Ale

Pours a dark brown, medium heavy head, good persistant carbonation. A nice smooth dark, probably a good introduction to dark beers for someone not used to them. It’s got a nice mellow roastyness that is not too strong. There is not a overwhelming smokyness and the bitterness is well moderated. Easy drinking crisp, and tasty, damn I just downed one with my dinner just now and am feeling happy.

My final rating is probably colored by my buzzness and feeling of well being of having this with dinner after a hour+ ride, 4 out of 4 relaxed out monkeys.

Dead Sushi

Went to go watch the HIFF screening of this latest from director Noboru Iguchi. Here on our shores, he’s probably best known for Machine Girl which got fairly wide exposure, in addition to the usual film festival screenings it also got a US DVD release. His other works that I’ve seen are Mutant Girl Squad, Sukeban Boy, and he directed some of the eps of the Dogou Girl series. If none of these ring a bell, then you probably are not part of the demographic of those who enjoy these types of films. Were talking B (is it even that high?) grade Japanese gratutious splatter, nudity, prothstetic makeup, low budget effects, violence movies. Continue reading ‘Dead Sushi’

Non-sequitur

Seen late last night at 12:30 on my way home cruising through Waikiki on Kalakaua in front of the Outrigger, two JDM girls in one piece dresses playing around on skateboards. Wonder if the cops came by and gave them skate punks hastles for inappropriate behaviour.

Rescue Rangers

Oh look who! So how much does each of these trips cost? Maybe those ideas of building a tram & restaurant, or zipline don’t sound so bad now?

I Don’t Want to Be on Shark Week

Finally, a good HI5-0 episode.  I feel they dropped the ball on the August March episode last week.  If he was such a crafty, well-connected dude, he would have found a way out of the situation besides stepping back into traffic and turning into a greasy stain on Pali Highway.  I guess the writers didn’t want yet another criminal eluding Five-O’s tenuous grasp.  Man, they’ve killed off a pile of recurring characters recently!  …oh, and I like how they patched the entrance holes, but not the exit holes on the inflatable boat.

Spatial Anomaly?

I hate when that happens!  I was looking for something, but somebody had ignored the labels and removed the area where it was, leaving a weird spatial vortex where random places from random times would fill in the void spot.  Dangerous.  Just plain dangerous… and irresponsible too!  There was just the label left.  You just can’t make this kind of stuff up.

No Taiyaki for You!

I haven’t been by the mall recently, but when I went by Shirokiya yesterday, the Akimune-an taiyaki concession and whatever that place next to them were gone and a construction barrier wall stood in their place.  I guess I’m not surprised.  Their rotating bi-weekly limited flavor stopped rotating at a certain point, and became unchanging chocolate custard creme and sweet potato (although the signs claimed they were still limited).  Also, when the rude/lazy Micronesian woman started working there, I really didn’t feel like going and having her tell me to just buy the pre-made ones that she would crank out and let go cold and soggy.  Run something poorly – watch it fail.

Hot Coffee Is Hot

Overheard as I was walking to Don Quixote. Two guys were parked on the street curbside parking debating the signs lining the side of the road. Begin 10/9/12 No Parking Anytime. One guy was justifying his parking there by saying it doesn’t specify an end period. Huh? No Parking… Anytime… Begin 10/9/12. Anytime… No Parking… Begin 10/9/12. How much more succinct can you get? It’s these people that would not even understand the Hot Coffee Is Hot warning, which despite all the chiding that McD incident gets, if you look into it I think the suit had validity. This incident however does not.

Victorinox Classic Stay Glow

I must have either been underneath a rock or just not paying attention, otherwise I would have gotten one of these a long time ago. When I wasn’t looking, Victorinox added glow-in-the-dark yellow to the list of choices for scale color for their Classic pocketknife. Like the GITD 1-liter Nalgene bottle, the luminescent feature at first seems gimmicky, but in actual use the ability to glow is understandable and desirable. I figure it will make the knife easier to find and harder to lose. If the knife lives in your pocket or SERE kit, it won’t be “charged” with ambient light, so it won’t glow when you whip it out in the dark, but if you’re using it at night with a flashlight or headlamp, the glow will probably help locate it if you put it down or drop it. Even if it isn’t “charged”, the slightly greenish yellow is pretty garish, so it stands out against most natural background colors, making it easy to spot even if it isn’t actively glowing.
