PTuning License Plate Relocation Kit

Tuned by P? Anyway this is a kit to mount your license plate to the front tow hitch, application listed for this part # is for the FR-S/BRZ. This avoids having screws jammed into your front bumper. Pictured is the base kit that consist of machined steel rod that threads into the cars tow loop fitting, aluminum back plate that your license bolts to with the provided stainless cap screws, and a steel joint that goes between the plate and the steel rod. The join is curved in one plane so allows tilting, it’s not a ball joint though, so if you need to tilt the plate other than strictly horizontally or vertically, you’ll need to get creative with rotating the piece. The aluminum plate has a myriad of slots so it can be mounted off center at just about any desired position.

There are other similar kits available, but one of the reasons  I went with this one is it features some add on options. The next option is the functional tow loop. Sorry, because of the one complaint I’ll rant about a bit here I do not have a picture of it as shipped parts. The add on tow loop options comes as the machined steel rod, lock nut, red powder coated steel tow loop, steel (metric grade 8.8) swivel joint bolt, and two nylon washers. These washers are what drove me nuts trying to assemble this and made me not want to take it apart for a picture. There’s nothing wrong with having the washers, in fact its a nice touch to keep the loop from rattling, but the fit is so tight that it will give you a fit trying to get them in position between the center pivot and the loop. One problem is the loop is captured on one end, the bolt hole for the pivot on the loop piece does not go all the way through. Because of this it’s close to impossible to get something into the hole to try and move both washers into position. Actually the fit was so tight that that didn’t work anyway. Another problem is that the outer diameter of the washers are a bit smaller than the outside edge of the loop making trying to position them by pushing on the outside of the washer also difficult. In the end though, it was just too tight. What I ended up doing that made it all better was take some 600 grit to the powder coating. It still took some monkeying, but I finally managed to get it together. I’m not sure how often I’ll need this option, hopefully not, but it’s good to have. And also it’s required for the final option.

The final option is the POV camera mount. It comes in two versions, the GoPro mount that I got, and a 1/4-20 standard photo tripod mount. There are these three aluminum parts that basically creates two ball joint with one side that has the camera mount, and the other threads into a hole in the tow loop mount.  The ball parts are covered in a rubbery material and I notice that the parts have the markings RAM cast into them. A quick web search reveals that they are a company that makes a myriad of these parts to mount your devices. Pictured on the right is the entire assembly.

The machined rod that threads into the car is steel on this product thus able to be used for these other purposes. Some of the other license plate brackets I’ve seen were machined aluminum, hello galvanic corrosion. The camera mount is a cool feature, and that necessitated the racer boy tow loop.

Quality and construction off all the parts is good, and made in the U.S.A. My only complaint was the tight fit of the tow loop swivel. It remains to be seen how well all the parts function, but it looks like there should be no problems.
