Futless FX

OK, first off thanks to Ckucky and Scat for stopping by for the assist. The main objective of swapping suspension struts went pretty painlessly. There was a slight complication of zapping a cracked flange with welder, but it all went together well, we got all four swapped, and even had bonus time to change out wheel studs on one rear to ARPs.

Part of the point of this exercise was to get the street FX ready to sell off. The futless part is if you remember a few weeks back, it died parked out on the street. So I diagnosed some more today. At first the fuel pump and CORelay that controls it was not putting out 12v. It turns out my jumper for the diagnosis bypass was junk so I made a good one. After that was fixed 12v at pump was confirmed and fuel could be heard flowing. Good, the pump still worked. The engine still wouldn’t run but after giving a good while to get some fuel flowing it finally caught on started up. It however sounded super loopy, like it was running super racing cams. Ckucky pulled plugs one by one to test if cylinders were firing, it seems both cylinder 3 & 4 were not firing.

Damn, but I am thankful I don’t need to drop the gas tank. But this is puzzling. We metered the fuel injectors and they are getting 12v. The injector coil resistance meters in spec. I can’t confirm that the ECU is correctly grounding out the injectors. I guess what I need is a stethoscope to listen for the injector clicking. I’m really suspicious of the injectors because Toyota used a bankfire system and has banks 3 & 4 together. I swapped out the ECU and still rough riding. There is one thing I haven’t checked because I couldn’t find the tester, the compression. It is conceivable that the headgasket blew between cylinders 3 and 4, a fairly common failure with this engine. It seems odd that it would do this parked on the street though. If I could find the tester, it would be easy enough to confirm this. Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

  • I have a compression tester somewhere. Let me know if you need me to look for it.

  • Do you think maybe the plugs in those cylinders are fouled? Check them. Maybe even pull them, lay them down with the plug wire attached, crank the ignition and check for spark. There’s a possibility they may have fouled when we were trying to start the FX up last time I was there.

  • I know you’ve already solved the problem, but a blown head gasket would not cause either the injectors to not squirt or the plugs not fire.

  • Headgasket blown between 3&4 would cause those two cylinders to not want to fire and engine to run crappy. The rally FX did this, but it didn’t run THIS crappy!

  • I actually thought the exhaust burble sounded “Rad”.

  • “Ckucky pulled plugs one by one to test if cylinders were firing, it seems both cylinder 3 & 4 were not firing.” makes it sound like the plugs were not sparking.
