Furries

Yesterday (Thursday) kicked off with a massive breakfast with our hosts at Gwenies in Anchorage. Hot cakes and reindeer sausage for me. I can say Rudolf was tasty, it was like Portuguese sausage. It was a bit odd that when we finished, it was still dark at 8:00.
Cruise at our main hosts 4,000 sq-ft home for a while. Full on auto racing memorabilia house hold. Quite cool. More cars than I have, but they have the space!
After relaxing a bit we formulated our plan for they day. We were heading south on highway 1 to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and whatever else catches our fancy along the way. It was a nice scenic less than 1 hour drive along coastline. Quite different geography, lots of mudflats and ice. The Center was pretty neat, it’s mostly rescue and orphan animals, reindeer, oxen, moose, eagle, bears, wood bison, a red fox that was totally intrigued by the furry-mimi outfit the girl in our group wore, a couple lynx, and other animals. Didn’t see any of the beluga whale or the tide change mentioned in our driving guide. Not right time I think.
On the way back we did a drive by of Aleyska resort, not open yet. Another good snow dump and they’ll be good to go. Doesn’t look to be very big resort wise, and this is the biggest around here. Stopped for some pretty darn good sandwiches at little pizza shop in small strip mall down the road. looking around, it Looks like AK really is backcountry that you want to do. Save the dineros for the heli, because there were lots of awesome looking lines in the mountains that were not in the resort!
Drove back to town to kick back and dinner with a bunch of other AK motor heads. Going to sleep good tonight, it’s fully dark by 5:00.
