Finally got around to replacing tires on the FR-S, the original Bridgestone Turanza finally wore down to point of questionable safety check. Everyone would ask, oh are those the Prius tires? The FR-S actually comes from the factory with either of two tires, the “Prius” tires are probably better since they are summer tires. The ones that came on mine are the Turanaza’s which are all season, although their performance in mud was laughable.
These Potenzas are a new model that came out this past year and are considered the new king of the street tires for autocross, 200 treadwear qualifies them for street/stock class. Summer tires meant for ultimate road traction. They do not like cold.
Got them mounted up today (thanks Dale, sorry to see you leaving for mainland, who’s going to be my rallycross nemesis now?) Turning first corner could feel the difference, immediate response to the steering, stiff sidewalls. Getting out of the industrial area and onto the freeway could hit some of the fun on and off ramps to get a good feel, there’s a huge increase in grip over the flintstone tires I used to have. Harshness of ride I couldn’t tell if they were any worse, the FR-S’ suspension is pretty harsh as it is so it felt the same. They are noisy though, at times I thought I had some mud terrains on. Roll down the windows and turn on the tunes and it’s insignificant. If you’re in the market for these kind of tires, that’s not one of your priority items.
They’re pretty amazing, it’s made the FR-S feel like a different animal, now looking forward to taking it to autocross. Will have to see how well they wear. Oh, and they are actually cheaper than the OEM spec Turanzas!
4 out 4 autocross monkeys.
