The new half shaft ends came in from DriveShaft Shop. Interestingly these ones are the type I’m more used to seeing, the tri lobed bearings. The old joint utilized six large balls in a cage type bearing arrangement. I don’t know which is better. The diameter of the cup is slightly smaller and the bearing assembly looks a lot smaller and lighter. Anyway, removed the old boots, bearing assemblies, and installed the new parts, grease spooge getting everywhere. Yes, rebuilding CV joints is a horrible messy affair, I usually don’t bother anymore, but racecar. No using mystery China/Korea CV shafts.
For posterity, here’s another image of the broken end. Getting the boot over the large end was the hardest part, it was a tight fit. Everything else went together nicely, and installed into the FX easily last night. Sorry no other pics, everything was covered in the moly mess so didn’t want to touch the camera. I was happy I was able to finish it last night, the weather forecast was calling for dire rains to start. Ends up last night was quite nice. It didn’t start until early this morning and at lunchtime the rains really got going. The FX is back together and I was able to start it a short while ago. I’m waiting for the rain to subside a bit and will take it out.
And for future reference I will put this up in case I need to look up parts for the transaxle output seals and the Toyota part for the transmission counter shaft nut.
