Sauna Ride

It was intermittently drizzling when I got home yesterday, but I really wanted to get some riding time in.  By the time I was geared up, the drizzling had completely subsided, but the ground was damp here and there, especially in the grass.  The heat and humidity were incredible but not quite unbearable.  Staying inside the house would have been unbearable!

The Sandbox

shoesDoh, I should have looked at all the photos first. Yesterday at lunch, I found myself in the area of Sand Island so decided to go look for the new BMX track that is supposed to open. Not knowing much except general area, I drove as far into the Sand Island park as I could then parked and started walking in. I went in as far as I felt comfortable walking by myself, in aloha shirt. Found someone’s tent, quickly left that area. Found large loaders. And found killer nasty kiawe, that went straight through my shoe and poked the sole of my foot. After looking at the photos on the website, it looks like the track is way on the other side, much closer to the boats. AH well, we’ll check it out another time!

BMX Tuesday

The second BMX tuesday was shaping up and I dug out of work as soon as I could. Scat, Risu, Ckucky, and myself met up once again at Ckucky bicycle storage. I had my pieced together Chase, but in keeping with the theme, I borrowed Scat’s 20″ BMX. Jeff was also there with a freshly built up S&M. WOw, 20, 24, and 26″ BMX was all represented! We eventually cruised out to McBike since Risu had to go to work. Once there, we checked out some of the Redline BMX’s hanging on display. Dang, just how old are we? Talk about regressing! Isn’t this what we did as “kids”?

There is something to be said about cruising about on little single speed bikes. It is fun. We leave McB and head to Ala Wai to check on the little jump that used to be there. The palm trees there were totally gone, a crater where one of the stumps was. Not much fun there, we continued on the bike path, to find that it’s still closed off from the sewer work. Detour along Iolani and come out across from Kaimuki. Dead Guy track calls. Continue reading ‘BMX Tuesday’

Wrong of Way

At the bottom of my street, there is a T-intersection. While out riding today, I stopped at the stop sign at the bottom of the hill. Being the after work rush, there was comparatively a lot of traffic at this otherwise quiet intersection. There were two cars on the left, and three cars on the right.

No biggie.

I clipped out and footed down to wait for an opening. The first right car was a Lexus RX. She (I’m profiling here: Lexus RX + illegally dark tint + bad driving = short Asian mom) stopped appropriately to make a left into the street I was coming out of until the left cars passed. She then waited there. If the windows (including windscreen) weren’t excessively dark, I would have probably seen her waving me through. I had the stop sign: She had right of way. I unclipped the other foot and stood down. I was not going to trust her and go. Continue reading ‘Wrong of Way’

Repeat

For some reason, I felt inspired to ride today. Part of it was being off the bike for a long time, and another was getting used to a high level of daily exercise while in Kyoto. My arms hurt from riding BMX with the crew last night (thankfully, I wasn’t cut and bloody like JT). My ischial arches hurt from riding on Monday. Nonetheless, I went for an after-work spin when I got home. I forgot to switch out to clear lenses, so by the time I was heading home, I had to pocket the Oakleys in order to see.

Back in the Saddle Again

Wow – it’s been a month-and-a-half since I last rode my bike! I got home in time for a quick after work ride today. It was a bit dark as Summer has given way to Autumn, but my health has been good since I got back from Kyoto, and the artwork for Monster Mash was turned in, so I was hankering for some riding time. I passed on a trail ride with Ckucke and Root yesterday since I was still feeling burnt out from working on my paintings from Friday night straight through Saturday afternoon. The wind was strong when I started out, but after almost an hour of riding, it had subsided. Riding is fun.

Urban Kookage

Picture 006-2Twas a strange evening in Kaimuki. Plans for an urban ride to shake out Ckucky’s 24″ BMX, and for Scat and I to just shake ourselves out with an urban ride got pushed back to tonight. I hustled from a training session in Aina Haina and managed to get to Ckucky’s house just before 5:30PM, and Scat was still stuck in his car somewhere on the freeway.  He arrived, not specially happy, but pulling out a bling bling 26″ BMX SE OM Flyer, you can’t stay depressed for long. He also had a 20″ beater BMX. Plans for me to jump on it were aborted when we found the rear tire flat. Time  was being lost, so I decided to just use my full suspension pig. Sporran?

Chris and I discussed this on our seperate drives home almost a month ago, but with the impending doom of Felicia and getting sick, I neglected to blog about it. On my way to meet the guys up at St. Louis is when I usually see all kinds of freakish and stupid krapp, usually along King Street. On the way to the last ride, I saw this fixie dude ride past with a black and white fur sporran on his drive-side hip! WTF?! I guess he needed somewhere to put his pocket goods, since there was no way to actually use the pockets in his unnaturally tight, pencil-legged, fashionably faded black jeans.

Invasive Species

IMG_0143Last monday thoughts turned to riding St. Louis. After the recent rains followed by clear weather, figured conditions would be prime. Ckucky and JT having time on their hands had already done two Dumps runs by the time I got to the park. I’d passed one guy on a cross country rig on the road up, just a precursor of things to come. By the time I geared up and the guys were roused from their lounging on a park bench, this guy had rolled through the parking and continued up into the park. Continue reading ‘Invasive Species’

Gu Chomps Energy Chews – Blueberry pomegranate

P8220192New product from GU sport supplements. Decided to try these “energy chews” which is fancy talk for candy. OK, they put stuff like vitamins in it to differentiate it, but they’re largely sugar of one form or another. I’m a fan of the Cliff Shot variety, but the shop no longer brings in the Margarita flavor which featured higher sodium to replace that lost in sweat and assist staving off cramps. GU stuff has been hit or miss, I use their lemon lime and strawberry banana gel supplements. Again mostly because no one brings in my favorite Cytomax gel version. The other guys have not liked their other products flavors, even going as far as eliciting an anger response from one!
