Past Blast

Sunday, 22 September 2013

The planning was long and drawn out for this ride. As the week progressed and the weather forecasts deteriorated, the committed participants steady dwindled down to Ckucke, Root, and myself. We were nonetheless enthusiastic, and with cool, breezy conditions, took on the leg-burning, lung-busting, constitution-breaking climb up Government Road and into tail end of Demon trail up to the melaleuca grove. There was a lot of weed growth along Demon toward the lowest extent. The dark places were damp and the water crossings were running slightly, but the general conditions were dry and grippy. There had been some hard rainsqualls early in the mornings for several days preceding the ride, but there were no issues with mud. There was, however, and issue with fallen guavas. With the hot conditions all summer, we may have encountered the second fruiting season. Ckucke was happy to find some ripe mountain apples. He was limited to grabbing what he could reach on the lower branches, but the trees were loaded with fruit higher up. Too bad there wasn’t any bamboo within easy distance. Wai-loony

The full loop of Wailuna takes a modicum of commitment.

I can’t say I was confident that my fitness level was going to be adequate to pull it off, but at least I knew what I was in for. The weather forecast for the weekend called for over 50% probability of precipitation on both days, so Jeff and the stand-up crew were out, regardless of the actual observed weather conditions. It did indeed rain like a muther on Saturday morning around sunrise, so I wasn’t particularly confident that the ride would really happen, but with no further rainfall and only partial overcast skies on Sunday, the word went out. Only Chris, Root, and I were partaking of the torture, so we decided to forego the monotony of yet another Ditch ride and see the elephant in the hills above Pearl City. Continue reading ‘Wai-loony’

Self Portrait?

OK, I give Les Stroud huge credit. A few weeks ago I took my car in for service so I was stuck in Kaimuki in the morning with no car. So I took my bike and went riding. Figured I’d have all day so I headed up St. Louis drive to Waahila Ridge State Park. With time to kill, I hauled all the action video gear up the hill. The idea had been floating around in my head for a while so I figured this would be a good chance to try it out some video shots. The only thing was I’m flying solo, so like Les Stroud, I am grip, gaffer, operator, p.a., stuntman, star. I have to set up the shot, then go back and get on the bike, ride and get the shot, stop, go back get the cameras, then set up the next shot and repeat. So from four hours of this, here is my final result, which by the way took just about as much time to edit!

New Fodder for the Meat Grinder

Looking at the clock in Chris’ car, I wasn’t surprised that we were the first at the trailhead. It was a little surprising that Root was moments behind us. Being a holiday, I was expecting the parking area to be full, but there was only one other user. Jeff, Sara, Danny and first-timer Craig arrived, and just about when the introductions were finished, Ckucke and JT arrived. It was good to see the stand-up crew back on two wheels in the dirt. There was some question as to whether JT could make it, since he had left his ride kit at work last week. He managed to borrow a helmet and shoes, so he was good to go. That made for a full crew! Still Cannot Find

Wtf, finally made it, 10:00, and I still don’t know where my mind went. A little sprinkle greeted me, breeze is weak but it’s not so hot in the shade up here. I hauled all this gear up here so I’ll try some Les Stroud and take some video of myself on the trails.

Lost mind

I don’t know what insane bug got in my butt. I’m sitting here on the sidewalk 3/4 of the way up St. Louis Heights at 9:40am on a Saturday! I took the FRS in for service for some issues so I decided to ride my bike up St Louis. Geared up with all my video stuff. It’s quite beautiful weather, but on the flip side hot. The bus passed me when I was at the bottom of the hill, I should have caught it.

Random Garbage Headset

Really?  Is there anything correct here?  The top overlocknut is cross-threaded.  The lower of the two keyed washers is turned and jammed on the threads so the key isn’t in the groove.  The second (second?!?!) overlocknut spins and neither tightens nor loosens, since the threads have been stripped on the steerer.  The giant spacer is just a piece of random tubing and is not square on top or bottom.

…oh, and the headset is loose.

Crowded

I never saw so many people out at the Ditch.

When we met at the trailhead on Sunday morning for a quick spin, the parking area was full. Chris wondered if Xterra or something was coming up, though we didn’t see anyone who really fit the flailing triathlete profile out on the trail. Almost immediately, a lady with a helmet came out through the gate. She didn’t have a bike, which confused me. Was she just a clumsy hiker? Later as we were heading in, she went in to retrieve her bike that she had left just inside the opening in the fence. Her riding companion had finally arrived at the bottom of the trail and was expousing her learned wisdom on the Maui shark attack victim from Germany. Just as we were starting the climb, a pleasant lady sand her two pleasant dogs also began the trail. Continue reading ‘Crowded’

Sucking Wind at the Summit

Even with tropical storm Flossie approaching, the forecast called for hot, sunny days this weekend, so even though it was clouded in on Sunday morning, we chanced a ride out at Royal Summit. It was ripping hot, but there was a good breeze going, so we didn’t die immediately from the heat. We did die later from the climbs, as we were instantly reminded why we usually tackle this area as a loop from the Wailuna side – the climbs at Royal Summit suck! My complete lack of conditioning became readily apparent as I dropped off the back. Definitely have to get more secret training time in before the next trail ride. We went up to the end of the doubletrack then snaked our way back down via the siding singletrack fun runs. There was a lot of daylight, so we sessioned a couple of sections until we ran out of juice and headed back out. We mistakenly went down into the airsoft area. We’ve done that before, and it sucked as much this time around. Continue reading ‘Sucking Wind at the Summit’

Shake and Break

After replacing the eight mangled spokes on my rear wheel on Tuesday, I went for a spin today to test out the rebuild. After some hard climbing and purposely hard landings, the wheel was still true, so I guess everything is fine. There was one inside drive-side spoke that was a little stretched that was bugging me, but since the wheel is still round, I won’t mess with it. On the way back, I accidentally found a mud bog in the park and ended up getting muddier than I have on any of the past several rides!
