Gas-ex

So here are the parts roughly assembled onto the old charcoal canister bracket. Only needed to drill two small holes for the stainless sheet metal screws that came with the white plastic clip thing and drilled two holes in it to thread the ziptie through. Have yet to road test, the battery in the road FX kind of went flat so charging right now.

Oh, and as for routing it back into the intake where the canister went, the BVSV in the coolant line is broken so I’m not sure what would happen if I routed it back into the intake with it open all the time. I suppose if I put it before the AFM then it would be no problem.

Gasy

The rally FX being all race has slowly been loosing extraneous things. One of the more recent things I did was remove the charcoal canister. It’s not needed for the car to run, however removing it and capping the line from the gas tank that used to go to it causes some issues. What happens is that modern fuel systems are sealed. The gas tank cap holds pressure as a limited one way valve. As you use up fuel, that would create a vacuum in your tank and make it hard for the pump to work, so the gas cap has a one way valve to let air in. But as things warm up, vapors in the tank expand and cause the tank to become pressurized. Normally these excess vapors are routed into the charcoal canister to be absorbed until they can be put back into the intake and burned off. Without the canister pressure builds until the safety release in the cap opens, which is enough pressure to also cause liquid gasoline to come puking back out the cap.

No Lane Change for You!

Funny to see a confrontational, road-rage driver in a white Forester XT with a “coexist” religious tolerance bumper sticker!

Mounto

Yes Mr. Pessimistic, now something else down the line started going. With the solid motor mount I did get better response and my times at the race were back up near the top. I did again get the engine light and some driveability issues. Back home checked things out. The code was O2 sensor and starter signal so today I took a look. Changed out the O2, its placement was kind of close to the drive shaft and I kinda bent the wire a little one of the times I messing with the shafts. I also looked at the engine mount. The welded up mount itself was fine. The bolts holding bracket on the transaxle however had come loose. Tightened those up, hopefully they’ll hold. We’ll see next race, I just have to  stop hitting so many cones!

NVH, More is Better, Right?

OK, so you  saw my engine mount woes. I’ve had various good suggestions, fabricating a mount that uses some known leaf shackle size was a good one. But with the next event a week away and me being lazy, I decided to hack something up with what I could find to solve this problem. I could have bought some more window weld and filled the mount with goop, but I knew that wouldn’t last one event. So heck, I’ll fill it with steel! Now if I had the tools, this could have been done in an hour or so. Instead I scavenged other engine mount brackets and had at it with angle grinder and cut-off disc. Junkyarding

This past rallycross the FX had been having power and driveability issues. Luckily this time I saw the CEL come on so I pulled the codes later. Turns out the error is from the AFM. Unfortunately perusing Root’s boneyard revealed 3 AFM’s in a addition to the one in the street FX and one in the rally FX were all bad. The street FX was in the best shape, it should be since it was a reman bought recently from NAPA, so I swiped that one into the rally. The street then got the next best one I could find.

So this past Saturday I decided to go check out ABC in Pearl City. Haven’t been there in a while so might as well see what they got. Mostly overcast, but still hot. Not a single Corolla AFM to be found. In fact AFM’s seem to be one of the first things to go, there was hardly a car with one left! Continue reading ‘Junkyarding’

Mounting Woes

Crawled under the rally FX tonight & dropped the engine crossmember. Sure enough, the 3M Window Weld mount has failed again. Didn’t last long, this stuff just can’t handle this kind of stress. Doesn’t help that pumping it out of a caulking gun allows for a lot of air pockets. Come this weekend I’ll give up on this and am going to cut and weld in some plate to make a solid mount. NVH? It’s all there!

Not Rallyproof

OK, I guess I’ve been abusing my GoPro beyond it’s capabilities. This was mounted under the front bumper, and today’s course had a couple sections that became rutted so was contacting dirt. Prob should have taken a cue when one of the click in mounts snapped, but instead I switched to shorter mount and kept going. On one of my final runs I got back to see that the mount was intact, but the case was empty! It looks like the latch popped open. Eventually we were able to find the camera and the wifi back. It’s pretty banged up but it appears to still turn on. Connector is crammed full of dirt and the lens is scratched. The real suck thing is that I didn’t notice until I got home, the flash card is gone! No footage!

Waterfront Syndrome

It must have something to do with the demographic of people who work in or around Waterfront Plaza, but I’ve seen multiple people now making left turns off of Punchbowl  heading there turn into the ONCOMING lane of traffic because there were pedestrians in the crosswalk in the lane they wanted to turn into.  This is more than the lazy wristed people who cut the turn because their ineffectual girly arms aren’t effective at turning the steering wheel more than a quarter turn – this is a conscious effort to intentionally drive in the wrong lane.

The New Ass Hat Car

Seems like the Prius has replaced the Golf as the a-hole’s car of choice.  I’ve seen a Prius C and several Gen2 Priuses cutting in and out of traffic and going full bore off the changing traffic signal this week.
