Fallen Arches

Sunday, 10 August 2014

Since the rain that arrived with Tropical Storm Iselle rendered the trails too wet to ride, we went on a brief wander around the Lanai lookout. The original idea was to look at the mountainside “natural arch”, but that is more on the Blowhole parking lot side. The weather was blazing hot and cloudless, leaving little hint that there was a tropical cyclone in the neighborhood less than a day ago.

Bracketed by Cyclones

With the weekends before the Whistler trip dwindling, we have not one but two tropical cyclones on the way to ruin the prospects for riding this coming weekend. At this time, it looks like Iselle will pass to the South, and in a couple of days, Julio will pass to the North. Iselle hasn’t made landfall on the Big Island just yet, but it was just downgraded to a tropical storm. Julio was upgraded to a category 3, but is expected to weaken to tropical storm strength before skirting the state. Genevieve that gave us bad weather a couple of weeks ago when it passed far South of us as a tropical depression is currently heading toward Japan as a category 5 super typhoon.

Turned Back by Rain

Wednesday, 23 July 2014

Oh well.  When I got home, the weather looked unhapy, even though everything was fine and sunny less than an hour before on the traffic cameras.  I still wanted to at least get a spin on the modded Moment “A2” to see how everything felt, so I went out for my normal neighborhood spin.  Not unexpectedly of course, within about 10 minutes it started to drizzle, so I returned home.  I did get in the whole loop, but didn’t get to do any sprints or climbing interval laps.  Continue reading ‘Turned Back by Rain’

Rollover Imminent

I saw a woman on the freeway in a 4Runner driving straight with her right hand in the 9-o-clock position on the steering wheel. No left turns for her: Only hard, yanking rights that will put the vehicle on it’s driver’s side.

Stanknasty

You end up with a nauseating charbroiled beef fat stink just walking by that Korean snack shop/convenience store on the third floor of the Ala Moana professional office building. I want to change my shirt or take a shower or whatever it takes to get rid of this smell so I won’t have a gag reflex all day.

On Any Sunday

It’s been a while, I’m sure there were times when I was not around, but this morning heard the sirens go up the street, followed later by sounds of Air1. Time for someone to get a ride in the barf bucket again!

Static

Ah, there. KORL’s transmitter is back on line.

Breaking in the New Dragon 3’s

Wednesday, 25 June 2014

Weather was good enough to get out and try the new Dragon 3’s. I mounted the cleats the day before, and they seemed to snap in at about the right alignment. They were way stiffer than the old Dragon 2’s, but that’s both from the carbon plate in the new shoes, and the old shoes being totally flexed out. There was some discomfort on the lateral edges of my feet at the proximal end of the metatarsals as expected from new, narrow Italian shoes. I figure the shiny, more impermeable Lorica in these new shoes will take longer to soften and stretch, so the break-in might take a while. Wonder if it is the shoes breaking into my feet or the other way around?
