Swolen

Ok, beyond the usual third day aches this morning, the wrist sprain is now quite obvious.
No new snow, no announcement of the alpine opening, so it looks like it’s going to be a lazy morning.

I.C.E.B.

Undergoing the recommended treatment for sprAins. Ice, Compression, Elevation, Beer. Sprained my wrist avoiding a Flaily boarder that kept riding into my path just before the Red Chair lift base, where all the traffic packed and scrubbed the snow down to concrete. Caught a heel edge and went down hard on my back. Didn’t even notice after collecting my wits a bit and moving to the side that my Flow highbacks had become flipped open. When I tried going again, I was pretty close to freeboarding and super wiggly!
Anyway, aside from that it was a good day on slopes, some soft stuff still was to be found on runs.

Overheard: powder sucks!

So we were riding the meadows under Franz’s chair in the 19cm of new overnight snow and overheard this conversation:

“I hate you!”
“Powder sucks!
“This is the worst run ever!”

Arrr!

>Reported 19cm overbite on mountain, woke up, no snow falling, finish breakfast getting ready, look outside, dumping! The plow went through less than an hour ago!

Pumped up!

Internal clock somehow woke me up minutes before alarm, pumped up for a potentiLly awesome day. Looks like it’s been snowing throughout the night. Not snowing now, but taking a look outside shows village had a nice number of inches. ROD!

Vancouver-WB

Happy to report snow situation looking good. Vancouver city is even getting a good dump. Whistler is likewise! Checked into unit at Eagle Lodge and amazingly unit is right by elevator. Usually we get stuck way in the boonies, you know how the boys like to party!

YVR

In YVR a little late, but our bus is three hours away anyway. Snowing at airport, plane has to pause a bit before pulling into gate because can’t see the lane markings on ground!

No Bus? Get ‘Bus-up!

Well, I guess since I have no means of getting to the snow during this early part of the season, I’ll be downing brews when I’m not out hiking.  Enjoy the beer reviews!  For Hawaii readers, many of these JDM production beers and jibiiru are available at Marukai, Liquor Collection, or Don Quijote – check it out.

At least Root and Fabio will be ripping fresh lines in Whistler this American Thanksgiving!

Denied Vital Need-to-Know Information

Kuso!  Just noticed on the revised bus schedule for the 10/11 season that the early season buses from Sapporo to Sapporo Kokusai are running only on Saturdays, Sundays, and National holidays.  That means I’m screwed for tomorrow and Friday.  I heard that buses to Teine Highland also only run on weekends and National days, although their website only shows the bus schedules for high season.  My only recourse may be Onze, but considering the one run of man-made snow they have intermittently open, I may just cut my losses, take the bindings back off the board, pack it back up, and just go hiking instead…

No Snow? No Bike? Hike!

The base at Sapporo Kokusai had been steadily shrinking from the 50cm on opening day with no resupply in sight, so instead of blowing cash to ride out there on the bus and risk injury on the concrete-hard refreeze, I decided to head for the hills in a different way – on foot.  I loaded up my pack with foul weather gear in case the forecast rains did arrive, and headed intop the hills above Sapporo.  As  a warm-up, I went up and around Maruyama.  The trailhead for this 3km loop is just down the road from the Maruyama Zoo.  There were about a dozen other people out on the trail with me that morning, along with a bunch of crows that followed said people, waiting for them to drop potentially edible things.  On the return to the trailhead along the stream that runs down alongside the zoo, I found an Ezorisu that was hoping for a handout.  Making squirrel noises kept him hanging around, even if I didn’t give him anything.  I’m not sure if MTB riding is prohibited, but the amount of wooden steps would make this about 30% portages.
