First Dirt of 2010

Chris had free time on Saturday, and the weather was outstanding, so he and I met Root and Ckucke out at the Ditch. Jeff and Sara were out on the water, and JT was working, so it was just the four of us. Although the sky was perfectly blue, the ground was still damp from rains on New Year’s Eve. We figured our best bet would be to stay up high, so we climbed Government Road and took the Demon Trail all the way to Pube Tree. Demon Trail was slightly damp, but no worse than usual. The further extent was a little grown in with invasive weeds. Continue reading ‘First Dirt of 2010’

2010 60th Annual NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen

The New Year in Hawaii means interesting seasonal entertainment from Japan on KIKU-TV. The general worldwide economic downturn has been reflected in this annual spectacle in more austere sets and decreased use of expensive shots like the helicopter fly-in on ELT on a rooftop stage at the opening many years back. The talent level has remained fairly consistent through the years, so the enjoyment level has remained pretty much the same. Here are some reflections on this year: Continue reading ‘2010 60th Annual NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen’

Happy New Year!

New Year 2010 fireworksHope last year went well for everyone out there, and that this year goes even better!

I’ve been working on the 2010 SNM wallpaper image, but I don’t have it finished yet.  Hopefully I can get it done before I fly up to Vancouver next week, but I still have some snowboard repairs, waxing, packing and some household plumbing tasks to perform, so keep your fingers crossed!  It’s quite wonderful, and distinct from last year’s one.

In the meantime, ride safe, and I’ll see you out there in the snow and on the trails!

Blue State

This morning, a bunch of non-local news trucks and camera crews were camped out in front of the State office building on Punchbowl, aiming their cameras at Queen’s. Really folks, anything having to do with Rush is not news.  Does anyone else find it ironic or hypocritical that he’s spending his cash for a vacation in a blue state?  It would be even moreso if the Kahala Hotel and Resort was foreign-owned…

Boxes of Fun

Box of fun openWoo hoo! Fun stuff for Chris and Dave from Supply Captain! Along with recent boxes from TAD Gear and Tactical Tailor, it’s like Xmas in December! Wait a minute…

Goodness My Gracious!

This cracks me up!  This reply to one of Root’s AE86 or FX16 threads was so funny that I had to let y’all see it:

Intimately, the post is really the sweetest on this worthy topic. I concur with your conclusions and will thirstily look forward to your upcoming updates. Saying thanks will not just be enough, for the fantasti c clarity in your writing. I will directly grab your rss feed to stay abreast of any updates. Fabulous work and much success in your business enterprise!

Everybody, please don’t panic!

Down Time

Hit St. Louis after work with Ckucke, JT, and Root before heading to McBike. The weather was clear, but being a few days away from the shortest day of the year, we had little ride time before the twilight overtook the daylight and sent us into darkness. Nice to be out on the trails after such a long absence!

Ghost from the Past

Weird.  Alexi from the old MTB XC racing days dropped by McBike on Tuesday.  I knew he moved back to the Bay Area years back, but he’s been intermittently returning to the islands.  This time, he returned with his >2-year-old daughter.

Acme Titanium Bonded Trauma Shears

Acme_shearsFabio put an order together for all of us from RescueDirect for trauma shears. It was pretty difficult finding decent quality shears locally, perhaps from not looking in the right place, or not having access to the wholesale medical supply companies’ inventories. Most of the stuff I found wasn’t even PRC quality – heck, the ones McBike had were made in Pakistan or Afghanistan or something! I saw that Todd the tennis racquet stringer had a pair of nice shears that said “Acme” and “Titanium” on them. He had gotten them next door at Long’s on closeout after CVS took them over, but that was months before, so there were none left to be had. A quick search online identified the product, and a cursory investigation of the various online retailers’ shipping policy regarding The 50th State selected a dealer. The word went out, and soon we were rolling in trauma shears (it was more like a couple of months, but Fabio was busy). Continue reading ‘Acme Titanium Bonded Trauma Shears’

Why the Heck Am I up so Early?

ugly_shirt_and_cookiesI set the alarm for 01:30, but didn’t get up until 02:20. That didn’t give me much time before rolling out, but I at least ate some yogurt before heading over to Kaimuki. In anticipation of something like this, I had my kit all prepped from the night before. Food wouldn’t be a problem, since I had some bars and gels, and there would be a lot of idle downtime before start time. The sky was clear, but it was only starting to cool off from Saturday’s heat. There was very little outbound traffic, but the potential of HPD action kept me at the speed limit. The freeway was clear so my timing worked out about right. Chris and Mitch were already there at the KCC parking lot, and Ckucke and Root rolled in soon after. Quite amazing – everyone showed up for the 2009 Honolulu Marathon wheelchair division escort!
