U Boob

OK, someone’s got too high an opinion of themselves. On my drive home from work yesterday KORL wasn’t playing anything good so I switched to BT to play music from my iPhone. The second song to come up was a U2 son. Huh? I didn’t think it was doing Pandora and I didn’t have anything U2ish in my lists, I’m not a fan. Turns out U2 was doing a free thing with their latest album on iTunes. Problem was it was done as a push thing so it showed up in your device whether you wanted it or not. WTF, U bonerz did this the wrong way, you’ve rubbed a lot of people the wrong way.

Beer Is Good – Mythos

I grabbed dinner at Olive Tree and ducked into the little market next door while waiting for my order. Lots of neat little Mediterranean stuff. Grabbed  this “premium quality Hellenic beer” to try with dinner. Pours a slightly cloudy light yellow, small head. Not a strong aroma, “karakuchi” dry taste with a fairly strong initial bitter which quickly goes away. A clean beer. Just a hint of skunkyness snuck into the aroma near the end. Perhaps the light reaction happened that fast?! Time to switch from CFL to LEDs! BTW, “skunked” beer is a result of light on the shorter wavelength end reacting with and breaking down hops compounds into the same stuff that makes skunks stink. People are quite sensitive and it only takes a tiny amount.

Anyway, this beer was nice and clean but kinda non-descript. The skunk that crept in kinda bummed me out and made me give it a 2 out 4 Hellenic monkeys.

Kart, is that like Krab?

Last week Saturday as a end to a great four year run of rallycross, we had a party at The Groove, a kart track that recently opened up in Kakaako. Unlike the other track out in Kapolei, these are gas karts. You could argue that like krab, karts are not like real race cars, but I think you would be wrong. These things are great fun and when you get up to speed, it does feel pretty real! And since all the karts are so similar, you get to see how much a difference a good driver and technique makes. I tended to be tail happy and slide a lot of the turns and it showed in my times. My times were decent, but at least a full second slower than the top drivers, over a 20 second lap. Small mistakes in your line show up in your time.

Oh, and driving these things will give your arms and shoulders a workout. Non power, very quick steering means some muscle needed to hold these things in line. And if you’re skinny like me, get those butt gasket seat pad things. I didn’t know about them until my last run, without them I was swimming around in the seats no matter how tight you made the belts. Got bruises on the inside of my knees to show for that!

Tubeless, not dentless

OK, tubeless technology does not mean dentless. On last Tuesday’s St. Louis DH ride on the road back to Ckuky the rear started swimming around. Yes, the tire was going flat. Hand pump got it enough to get back to his house. Last night I took the tire off for a more detailed inspection. Looks like I smacked a rear hard enough to dent the rim, on one side, and cause it to leak. Proceeded to pry and pound it until it was a little better and with more sealant it’s holding air.

Getting Squamish

We’ve been hearing from people that the riding in Squamish is great, some even saying it’s better than Whistler. Squamish is about 40 minutes south by car so after test fitting (cramming) all the bikes in the Suburban after our Thursday ride, we decided to check it out today. The weather is overcast, cooler, and drizzling. Continue reading ‘Getting Squamish’

khyber death march

Our Top Of The World ride turned into an epic super technical singletrack downhill death march. Imagine doing St. Louis World Cup Downhill for 5 hours. I exaggerate, a little. The start of TOTW trail was rocky and dusty much like lower St Louis. It mellowed out and we found the turnoff to Kyber pass. Continue reading ‘khyber death march’

Top of Wednesday

Sorry about the lack of updates. Lots of riding, eating, sleeping not leaving much energy for writing. Sunday was a nice shake down ride in Lost Lakes. Monday a death march, perhaps not of epic proportions, but it was DM ranked. All day ride on river runs thought it and bunches of other trails ending in Moose Knuckles and a road ride back
Tuesday a nice loosen up the legs fun ride back in the list lakes area.
On tap for today is the Top of the World trail downhill!

Whistle Sunday

Flight on Friday was uneventful. Drive from Bellingham was nice. We did get held up in Vancouver navigating the streets and the heavy Saturday traffic. There was some street festival going closing one street. Saw some Shingeki no Kyojin cosplay walking through the streets, presumably on their way to the convention center for the Vancouver anime con happening the weekend. Continue reading ‘Whistle Sunday’

Beer Is Good – Sam Adams Oktoberfest

Grabbed a sixer of this years SA Oktoberfest. Pours a clear medium dark amber with medium head. A bit of the floral and bitterness of hops, but its not out there prominent. A nice medium roasty and very nice nutty finish. A medium thick mouthfeel without a whole lot of carbonation to lighten it.

A nice brew, an easy 3 out 4 oompha monkeys.
