Beer Is Good – Henry Weinhards Redwood Flats Amber

Pours clear orange amber, weak head that quickly dissipates. Moderate floral aroma, almost smells like hint of jasmine. Subtle roast, medium bitterness that fades but leaves a touch of astringent feel on tongue. Medium mouthfeel that despite the weak head is cut by a fairly strong lasting carbonation. An easy quaffing pleasant beer.  I wonder, did this beer used to be called something else and they just rebranded?

Mark My Words…

Forgot to post, as Ckucky and I were working on the FX’s on Saturday, saw HFD go up the street. Sure enough HFD 1 came buzzing by, although at a leisurly pace. They didn’t deploy anything and instead just touched down at the top, picked someone up, then flew to the park.

Beer Is Good – Goose Island Honker’s Ale

Next offering from Goose Island brewery, pours a clear medium amber, small head that persists. There’s a fair amount of the hop note that is in the other two brews I’ve tried, but this one is nicely mellowed by the darker roasting. The bitter is there, but its done pretty smoothly. A medium mouthfeel. This one is a winner!

Suck!

So here’s what happened with the street FX. I went out & got a compression tester and a stethoscope and went about diagnosing the car. Pulled the sparkplugs, they were pretty gunky and the gap looked pretty eroded and huge. I tested the compression, #4 was a little low but within minimum spec, #3 was very good. So while the readings indicated that to be in top running condition, the engine could do with a rebuild, it was still in good running shape. So the headgasket looks to be ok. What now? Futless FX

OK, first off thanks to Ckucky and Scat for stopping by for the assist. The main objective of swapping suspension struts went pretty painlessly. There was a slight complication of zapping a cracked flange with welder, but it all went together well, we got all four swapped, and even had bonus time to change out wheel studs on one rear to ARPs. Beer Is Good – Goose Island 312 Urban Wheat Ale

Next offering from Goose Island Beer Co. It pours bright lightly cloudy yellow with a medium head. Strong hops, some citrusy tones, some bitterness and taste of grain in the middle. Medium mouthfeel. I was expecting a heffe, I got something more like a pilsner, with an unfortunate leaning to the skunkyness. A mixed bag, it’s drinkable but not to my taste.

So Le Noid

I finally decided to do something about the starter problem on the rally FX. It’s a chronic problem with Corollas of this vintage. On the street FX I simply put a pushbutton in parallel with the ignition key. It works, most of the time, but occasionally even that does not, so there is something else in that circuit that is contributing to voltage drop. Instead of pushing the full starter solenoid current through the ignition switch, I decided to run it through a relay, the way I thought it should be.

Salute the Scotish

If you fancy yourself a sashimi lover and of sake (salmon), get yourself down to Marukai and get a piece of what they have labeled as Scottish farm raised Steelhead Salmon. I don’t know what the Scott’s are doing, but whatever it is they’re doing it right! Go now and get it fresh it enough to do it up right as sashimi and you won’t be disappointed. Is this like the Kobe beef of salmon? The “marbling” and fat content is awesome, makes it almost buttery when you slip a piece of it in your mouth. OOhhh yeah!

Exhausting

The guys at Exhaust Systems Hawaii took care of the Rally FX once again. They gave me a break on the cost of the flex joint seeing as I go to them almost as much Scat! Hour later and I was out with a new, shorter flex installed. We shall see how long that lasts. I’m hoping fixing the engine mount helps. In two weeks we’ll have our Fathers Day rally, at Kualoa Ranch!

Beer Is Good – Goose Island Summertime

A “traditional German-style Kolsch” beer. This Goose Island stuff is a new offering at Foodland. Pours a bright clear yellow, weak head. There’s a bit of yeasty aroma, strong but not overpowering hops gives it some bitter bite, but it quickly subsides leaving some hints of malt. It’s a pretty clean dry beer, excellent with food, while still having some character.
