Beer Is Good – Leffe Blonde Belgian Ale

P1020763Found something new at Foodland, this blonde Belgian. Pours a clear medium light yellow with strong head that persists. The strong carbonation gives a crisp initial, but there is a fairly heavy syrupy mouth feel. Can kind of taste the higher alcohol content, its stated on label at 6.6%. I understand its actually one of the lightest of the Leffe’s. There’s a bit of pungent aroma and taste from the spice. Reading up a bit on these, they are inspired by Trappist Ales, but commercially mass produced. This is an interesting beer, I suspect people will either find it intriguing and like it, or be turned off by it. To me, it’s more a sipping beer. If anything I think it gets better as it warms, the flavor changes and the spices come and blend better. 3 Belgian monkeys out of 4 here.

Wunder Kat

Just talked to doc, surgery sounds like it went well. The bones pretty
Messed up, but they got it to point where passages for bowel is clear now, which was most pressing concern. Next good mews was she showed signs of nerve response in her left leg so they did not amputate. Have to see how it progresses but doc was quite pleased. And lastly she’s melted the hearts of everyone there, the doc, who’s style is pretty clinical in the conversations I’ve had was positively gushing on how great she was and such an angel putting up with the procedures and still purring away.
Hopefully Musubi you pull through this and only you color will be what your name is for, not that you’re three sided.

Beer Is Good-SA Variety Pack: Noble Pils

P1020761Noble Pils is another selection from the latest Samuel Adams variety pack. Pours with a fairly small head, medium light amber. Carbonation stays and gives it a pretty crisp feel. There is a pretty strong but not overwhelming bitter throughout that gives it a further “karakuchi” dry taste. The floral of hops is there, but not that strong, and none of the skunkyness I dislike in many pils styles. It’s certainly drinkable, but my preference run toward darker brews and I like to taste a bit of nuttyness. It would prob make a good otsumami beer, good to have with snacky bits. It almost ranks a 3 out of 4 noble monkeys.

Bionic Kat

Verdict is in, Musubi got mushed by a vehicle. Significant pelvis fracture, surgery, plates & screws will be involved. We can rebuild her, at a cost of course! Not quite six million dollars. There’s a good chance she will lose the leg. The good news is it appears her internal organs avoided trauma so the injury looks to be non life threatening if treated. Her youth and disposition is also in her favor. Everyone loves her because she such a sweetie and easy to deal with.

2 Lives Down?

At vet with Musubi cat again. Last saw her Sunday night of the rains. Dad found her this afternoon under mockoranges near my room. Getting X-rays right now. Doc thinking might have been encounter with car. Seems to have nerve damage, left hind leg no sensation. Guess she did get into something, not taken in by somebody.
Geeze, she’s not even a teenager yet and getting into all this trouble.

Jalopy Day

P1020743Mr. Scat Spark Licka cruised on over this afternoon for a day of car stuff. No grease monkey today, today we’re going to mess with bodywork. We whiled away the first part trying to figure out how to fabricate a engine underbody gravel pan for the rally FX16. As we were leaving for City Mill to see if they had some appropriate sheet metal, Ckucky and Dave showed up after their session at the shooting range. Man, how macho manly can you get, go shoot some guns in the morning, then some welding on a car in the afternoon. Of course Dave with his iced mochaie espresso coffee thing and the fact that we we’re doing this and ignoring that there was some kind of sporting event going on kind of ruins that image.  Continue reading ‘Jalopy Day’

Out With The Old!

P1020742Oh yeah, been turning my room upside down. What’s this, Root’s cleaning his room? Didn’t make it for the New Year though. Been gradually reorganizing my room. Been dumping old piecemeal furniture bits, like the old color TV cabinet in my closet that was acting as shelf and replacing with more efficient shelving. Also picked up some Lundia wood shelving modules from City Mill to replace my desk and wall shelving. These are the wood shelving systems you’ll see throughout the store for displaying shelving. Pretty nice stuff. Not sure where they’re getting it from, this is Lundia euro stuff, not the Lundia USA. They look similar, but are not compatible, this stuff is in metric, although City Mill labels it in inches. Works fine. Not exactly cheap, the three uprights, seven shelves, and misc hardware set me back around $400, but it’s pretty nice. Solid wood, not particle board, goes together easily, adjusts easily. Will need to get the house fumigated sometime before it becomes termite food!

Root’s Movie Rentals

P1020739P1020737I was forwarded info to article in paper about the TV show Off The Map currently shooting in Hawaii was looking for vehicles for a scene in their season finale. Criterion was beat looking vehicles as this show is supposed to take place in the jungles of South America. Well people, do I have the vehicles for you? Within hours of submitting these pics to their casting dept, they called me saying they’d love to have them. But I gathered from the descriptions and what they said, they wanted people to drive to the shoot and man the vehicles for the scene, which is supposed to be a traffic jam during a festival. It would have been amusing to do, but they are shooting this Monday at Kualoa ranch, something I couldn’t swing. Oh well, next time, I’m not too heartbroken over missing chance to be in this show. If it were Hawaii 5-0 I might have considered it more. It seems to pay more to NOT fix up my vehicles. Guess it’s not easy to get that authentic patina!

Beer Is Good-SA American Originals Variety Pack: White Ale

P1020740Latest variety pack I picked up, “American Originals”, this is the White Ale. Pours faintly cloudy yellow, moderate head that dissapates, carbonation stays moderately strong. Mouth feel is fairly light and crisp, with just a bit of body. A bit of citrusy tang, without really having citrus, being a Belgian white style. The added spice flavors are not very strong here, I can’t really detect them, this is not a Hoegarten. Mild bitterness that stays even through the middle and gradually fades. I can’t say this beer is very interesting. It’s drinkable, but not one to make me seek it out. I’d have to go with a middle of the line 2.5 out of 4 weiss monkeys.

Botan Ebi

Mmmm, amaebi.

So today was meat day at Ninjaya (Nijiya), no really. 2 = ni, 9 = ku (kyu); 29 = niku = meat! Their cuts of meat are 20% off and it happened on a good day as I was out food shopping. I’d already went by Marukai and picked up a tray of sashimi for tonight, the plan was chirashi style sushi. My other plan was shabu shabu tomorrow if the meat was good, and indeed I picked up a couple trays of good looking ribeye shabu shabu cuts. I also checked out the fish section, Ninjaya might not be cheap, but they do on occasion have some interesting offerings, and I saw today they had trays of Hawaii botan ebi, yay! I’d seen it before, but it didn’t go with my food plans at that time, but this time its perfect! This is something I haven’t ever seen at any other supermarket, you’d probably have to go to the seafood specialty shops like Tamashiros. So I grabbed a nice small tray, checked out, and headed home.

Good stuff. Kinda gelatanous and sweet meat, yum! I hear most sushi places will deep fry the head and present it with the ebi. I didn’t want to try that, I instead tossed the heads into a quick dashi broth for a soup of shrimpy goodness with a couple bits of chutoro for good measure. Mmm, kinda a zeitaku meal meal when I thought about it, not so long ago something like this would have been for royalty! I hope I don’t get ill though, I dropped one ebi into the sink peeling it, I rinsed it off, but…. I couldn’t bring mayself to discard it, these guys (& at least one gal) weren’t cheap!

Anyway, sorry I neglected pics, but it was yummy!
