It Lives II

The AE86 lives again! To sum up, couple weeks ago, decided I better get off my duff and get the AE86 Corolla running and safety checked. I had ordered a complete new set of shiny rotors and performance brake pads because although it had passed safety, the brakes have been scary weak from the moment I picked it up. So I got those changed out and feeling pretty good, when I discovered the water pump had sprung a leak. Ran into some difficulties with that in that the new replacement part was too tight a fit, but I eventually got that together. So I thought all was good. I rushed over to the 76 station by my house, to later be informed that the car did not pass. One high beam was out, the horn didn’t work, and they didn’t like the bubbling tint on the driver rear quarter. Continue reading ‘It Lives II’

Italians almost forgiven

Ok, looks like I have to apologize to Italy, almost. That water pump for the AE86 installed last night is correct, almost. I mic’ed it along with the new Japan one I picked up and the shaft measures the same. Must be Italian metric, just a hair too big. Taking a file to it, coating it with oil, and it finally went on. I sure hope it doesn’t become a problem to remove in the futur

#%*! Italians

Excuse me while I let loose a stream of obscenities over here. I just spent the last four hours cleaning and installing the new water pump, gaskets, associated fittings, and then I discovered that the water pump does not fit. Actually everything fits except the fan. The first thing I did was compare the pumps and the usual dimensions matched. Not used to working on car with mechanical fan, I did not realize the end of the shaft does not fit in the depression on the back of the fan! Needless to say I am super annoyed. And having installed the pump, I cannot return it. I’m going to have to get a new pump, gasket, take everything apart again. It’s past midnight and I’m having a beer. &!^%@#^!@$# (Oh, the pump was made in Italy)

Incontinence

Dang it, see what happens when you get old. Both my Corolla’s have developed leaky problems now. My FX suddenly has started leaking rapidly. I had replaced that water pump not too long ago also, but didn’t have all the gaskets & o-rings so I guess my half-ass job is now coming back to haunt me. Bah. On top of that the starter/ignition key is really krapping out. I had to hot wire the FX four times today. At least I have all the gaskets, if I don’t take off the intake manifold…. Curses!

Raraya

p1010160Discovered by Scat, just newly opened at 1145 South King Street, a new ramen-ya, Raraya. located next to The Bike Shop and across the street from Precision Radio, near the intersection of S. King and Piikoi. The sign notes that it is iekei ramen, which some quick Net searching indicates it’s a style of ramen from the Yokohama area and seems to have originally been a chain of ramen shops. It features a broader flat noodle, slices of cha siu, spinach, sheets of nori and the options of specifing oilyness, saltyness, and firmness. Continue reading ‘Raraya’

It Ails

Curses. Checked the AE86 this morning since when I got home last night after break in drive it was sucking water. Filling water int almost dry radiator yielded a puddle on ground as water came seeping out of water pump. Nuts, guess its going to be another week before it goes anywhere. See what happens when you clean and flush stuff, you upset the delicate crust layer holding everything together….

It Lives!

The AE86 is rolling again! This past weekend was spent changing the brake rotors and pads in preparation of going for safety check. Things conspired to keep me from taking the car out to break in until tonight. I recharged the battery too, so the car started right up. Didn’t sound or smell beautiful, but it was running.dscf2467 dscf2449The brakes before were lousy, and there’s no surprise looking at how crusty they were.  Here we got the rear on the left, and the front here to the right. Discovered the front rotors are a little more involved to replace than on my other Corolla. Continue reading ‘It Lives!’

Icked Out

Sorry dude, I couldn’t take it, couple nights ago came across a good six incher scuttling around my doorway. I squished it. Centipedes creep me out. Should be a good incentive for me to continue cleaning out my room. Been slowly chipping away at that, and had kind of lost steam, but I better continue. We’ll see if I find any more ant nests. Those ants like video tapes, and after I cleaned that one up, they decided to move into a hardrive shipping box.

Centipedes are good

Satan Box

Well now, the Satan Box started working better after system restore of OS, DVDs burn in 15 min, card reader works, but sound still doesn’t, and then wouldn’t you know it, the power supply died on me last night. Maybe its underpowered. Annoying.

J iPhone, Fail

I know why the iPhone is doing so poorly in Japan, it has no keitai strap provision. How are you going to attach the two dozen mascots and jangly things to it?
