Another nice weekend. Sunday afternoon Dave, Jeff, Sarah, and I meet at Waimanalo for the Ditch Trail. There’d been some spotty rains through the week, but nothing too heavy. There’s a Jeep Wangler and Ford Explorer with Speedgoat.com sticker, looks like there’s some riders in the trails. We gear up and grind up the Government road. Trail is nice. Also some fresh horse dumplings. Following the route we’ve been using lately, we pass Maunawili Ditch and head up to the loop. It’s feels nice to hit the loop when fresh. Dave rides past the mango drop-in to explore and perhaps find the source of last rides archeology finds. As the rest of us wait at the mango tree, a bunch of guys come down the Government Road. Probably the guys in the Jeep and Ford, look like maybe military guys so it fits the image. Dave’s been gone a while, Jeff comes down and drops into Mango. Aparently Dave dropped in higher up, so we take the mango drop-in and hit the loop trail.

Pardon the mess while we reorganize some things, and hopefully make the site pretty. Dont worry though, none of the asinine commentary you’ve come to enjoy will be lost!
Just a little mini after work jump session at the Koko Head dirt jumps. Got stuck at work for a bit so a little late by the time I got there. Beautiful weather, a bit more wind, dirt seemed more dry and taking a bit of a beating.
Jay was feeling a bit worn out from the day at work and wasn’t hitting it the same as last week. Didn’t help that he creamed the boys just before I got there.
Some annoying munchkins came running through the jumps and couldn’t get the subtle hints of “Hey, come over here!” and kept running around the trails. Kinda interesting how some mild anger seems to make the jumping better. I hit the jumps the best I have so far. Also feeling a little more familiar with the jumps. Not a bad after work quickie.Â
So Saturday I start on installing the rest of the wheel studs. Having gotten da theorems down, the other rear wheel is done quickly. Scat called as I was starting to work on the front. I guess he was inspired by our midweek jump session and he asked about the weather at my house. There isn’t a cloud in the sky and it’s brutally sunny. I’m sure it would be a great day to hang at the beach and watch all the beach bunnies out on this March Hawaiian day, but it’ll be roasting out at the dirt jumps. So instead he shows up in the Sled with Chuck. They went by the body shop to start up Chucky’s Camaro, which is finally almost done with body & paint. Long story, best you ask Chuck about it if you want to know the whole story. By this time I was already done with one of the fronts, so there was only one wheel left to do, not much they could help with there. Continue reading ‘Paint Pounders’
Arr! That’s it, next season I’m forgoing the midseason Whistler and saving up for Japan. With the exchange rate tanking as it has, might as well go somewhere with a high percentage of powder poaching. So far, my midseason Whistler trips have been a little dissapointing. Not to say I didn’t enjoy them, like they say, a bad day of boarding is better than any day at work. And we had some quite good riding. But I want to experience some real, true powder. Not the week old settled stuff some woman called powder. If anything, I think I’ve consistently had more fun on our early season quickies. No crowds all around, and our luck with weather has been pretty good.
So Dave, after reading your posts, I’m going to put aside for the Japan fund now.
Well, so much for ambitious thought of hiking up Koko Crater in the dark to catch the sunrise from it’s peak. Didn’t get around to scouting the route and location before hand. Somehow I figured wouldn’t make it. But I went with my fallback plan of driving to Koko Head park and walking to just above the new dirt jump park and overlook the shooting range. I scoped it out last year and figured it a good location. Last year I went to Lanai Lookout and it was a good spot, but you need to go early as parking fills up. This spot is clear, just a single handful of people strolling by. Besides, it makes for more interesting picture than from the lookout. Anyway, it’s another year gone by. Pretty status quo. Here’s to another year!
Geezus, I can’t beleive I woke up this early. Not even to try get first tracks snowboarding do I wake up this early. May grumble about doing the wheelchair marathon escort, but I have to admit its pretty cool. The weather this time around is very doubtful. We just got through a bout of heavy rains, but yesterday (a scant three hours ago) was blue skies here. Throughout the night has been sporatic showers and in fact a squal just came through. Forecast calls for similar during event. We’ll see if it turns into the sloshy shoefest of how many years back. I couldn’t find my Rattail rear fender to put on, so it looks like that’ll offset Dave’s fender and it will rain.
