I’m glad my old car predates the higher mandated door height for passenger vehicles.  Even with the door beams and side airbags, it’s probably not as safe as a current car in side impacts, but at least I can actually see out the side of my car. Also, aesthetically my car doesn’t look all “gangsta” with tall door sheetmetal and tiny windows like a gen2 Scion xB or Chrysler 300. My sills are around 20cm (8″) below the Scion tC parked next to me. That’s like barely below my sight line!
I had to chuckle when I saw this sign as I drove past the Blaisdel Center farmer markets. I think I know what they mean, but still it’s something of an oxymoron.
Dammit! The dude at Akimune-an has to get his ears checked. I don’t know how I can say, “two Oreo and two anko taiyaki, please,†and it gets misconstrued as, “two custard crème and two anko taiyaki, please.† It sounds nothing alike – not even close.  And it wasn’t like he didn’t hear me because it was too noisy or I wasn’t speaking loud enough or clear enough since he didn’t ask, “what?†or even throw a quizzical eyebrow. Krapp! It would be the filling that I object to the most on intuitive levels and had absolutely no intention whatsoever of trying that I end up with. Since the special flavors rotate on a bi-weekly basis and I saw Oreo advertised last week, with my luck if I go back on Thursday, the flavor will have changed.  If I say that I wasn’t really all that excited about Oreo flavor, someone will call sour grapes. Truthfully, I wasn’t dying to get some, otherwise I’d have ordered them last week.  It’s being denied them and getting the shitty flavor instead that bothers me more than not actually getting to taste Oreo.  Now I’m sad.
Despite the steady drizzle, I stuck it out after the Honolulu Festival parade to watch the Nagaoka fireworks off Waikiki Beach. Figure I smooched some free sake off them, I better watch the show! Forgive the crooked video, I did this with a monopod propped against an uneven rock wall. I have to say the display was impressive, one of the best fireworks displays I’ve seen here. I can only imagine what it’s like back in Nagaoka! In hindsight, I should have recorded the whole show, but oh well.
As I watched the honolulu festival parade, I couldn’t help but listen to the asinine banter of the high school/early college aged girl. We’re we that stupid when we were kids?! It wasn’t even a cute kind of ditzy. Stupid with attitude. Yes, she was hot (but awful shoes) but that doesn’t make up for the stupid factor. Makes u worry about the worlds future. Damn I’m a crotchety old fart!
Kiko, at least I know not all kids are like that, your boys are fine. There is still hope!
The 18th Honolulu Festival is ongoing this weekend, I only learned about it thursday morning when a blurb was read about it on the radio that I have set to wake me up. Otherwise I may have missed it, they seemed to have bypassed print ads. Drawn by the lure of air conditioning and easy access I went to check out the events held at the convention center today. In a little bit of a bummer, it seems most of the Japanese performers were at the other venues. It was still interesting. It did give me more of a chance to walk around and check out the booths set up, something I haven’t really done other years. Quite cool was the Nagaoka booth who this year is bringing their famed hanabi/fireworks for a Hawaii show. They were supposed to do it last year, but well, I think it’s pretty understandable when you remember what was going on in Japan this time last year. What was really cool aside from the mock up giant firework shells, was the sake samples. Free booze! And pretty good stuff at that! Continue reading ’18th Honolulu Festival’
Friday took another day off and visited Antelope island. If your in Salt Lake City with nothing to do for a day and like outdoors & wildlife it’s worth checking out. It’s an island in the Great Salt Lake about an hours drive. Filled with geography and animals we don’t see in Hawaii. Arid, rocky, funky salt water. The shores awash with the dried up bodies of brine fly larvae. In our drive and the couple short hikes we did we managed to see the buffalo, which are hard to miss, mid sized bird of prey, some kind of field rodent, coyotes, antelope, deer, bunny, chukkers, seagulls. Wednesday decided to take a break, or rather bodies decided for us. Visited Cabellas, REI, Salty Peaks, Hobby Lobby.
Yesterday we headed out to Powder Moutain again to pound the few more inches of snow they got. Not epic powder conditions, but way fun and nice stuff. There was still unridden lines to be found throughout the day. Snow showers through the day broke into sunny periods in the afternoon. maybe not so great for snow conditions, but made for pleasant & photogenic riding!
Looks like today maybe another rest day, our bodies cant keep up quite so well anymore, and there was no significant additional snow to make worth it.
Yesterday was a excellent day at Powder Mountain. Snowing, can’t see anything, but full of fluffy snow!
I think our karma from stopping in the morning to help extricate the civic that had run off the road payed off. The girl driver was unhurt & the car looked to be fine, but we did our good citizen deed.
Forgot to add the when we finally made it to Salt Lake & picked up our luggage at SLC airport, the top pocket zipper on my Dakine bag was blown open. Gone was my little first aid kit, packet of quick clog, and my tent & goretex patching kit. My board bag also blew out a section of the main zipper but luckily did not fully open, nothing lost from that.
Despite all this, we did make it to Solitude resort & had a good half day of riding. Not the best of conditions, but it was fun. We shall see today!
