{"id":179,"date":"2007-07-03T17:05:47","date_gmt":"2007-07-04T03:05:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/blog\/2007\/07\/03\/field-expedient-repair\/"},"modified":"2007-07-03T17:05:47","modified_gmt":"2007-07-04T03:05:47","slug":"field-expedient-repair","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studionewmedia.com\/blog\/index.php\/2007\/07\/03\/field-expedient-repair\/","title":{"rendered":"Field-expedient repair"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/intake_1213a.JPG\" title=\"intake_1213a.JPG\"><img vspace=\"5\" align=\"right\" src=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2007\/07\/intake_1213a.thumbnail.JPG\" hspace=\"5\" alt=\"intake_1213a.JPG\" title=\"intake_1213a.JPG\" \/><\/a>The FJ80 was running hot (lean mixture) and the idle had suddenly gone low and rough.\u00c2\u00a0 A quick check of the intake revealed a crack in the rubber astronaut-arm runner that connects the throttle body with the AFM.\u00c2\u00a0 Being as this was 18:00 last evening,\u00c2\u00a0a repair to make it drivable to Toyota Parts\u00c2\u00a0today was in order.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Thankfully the tube hadn&#8217;t torn completely &#8211; the split was maybe about halfway around.\u00c2\u00a0 I cut a piece of bicycle innertube that would go about 1.25 times around the intake flex\u00c2\u00a0tube and split it so it would lay flat as a sheet.\u00c2\u00a0 After cleaning the intake tube and washing all the talcum off the innertube section, I slathered everything with <em>Rubatex<\/em> and tightly wrapped the innertube around the intake\u00c2\u00a0tube.\u00c2\u00a0 Some zip-ties helped ensure an airtight seal and hold everything in place until the glue dried.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Ran fine after that.\u00c2\u00a0 I could have just left it &#8211; I&#8217;m sure there are more hack repairs out there on the road that are considered &#8220;permanent&#8221; by their owners!<\/p>\n<p>Went by Toyota City and got replacements for both rubber sections of\u00c2\u00a0the intake from Clyde and put them on at lunchtime.\u00c2\u00a0 To replace intake runner sections, start by removing the\u00c2\u00a0air cleaner cover &#8211; this will allow for movement and space to remove the intake.\u00c2\u00a0 Remove all vacuum lines running to metal center section of intake runner &#8211; a small screwdriver may be needed to pry them off.
