{"id":321,"date":"2007-10-01T13:10:56","date_gmt":"2007-10-01T23:10:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/blog\/2007\/10\/01\/the-return-of-ass-poppa\/"},"modified":"2007-10-01T13:10:56","modified_gmt":"2007-10-01T23:10:56","slug":"the-return-of-ass-poppa","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studionewmedia.com\/blog\/index.php\/2007\/10\/01\/the-return-of-ass-poppa\/","title":{"rendered":"The Return of &#8220;Ass-Poppa&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/v\/Fooligans\/20070929\/DSCF0342.JPG.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" align=\"left\" width=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/d\/23845-2\/DSCF0342.JPG\" height=\"150\" style=\"width: 150px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>Chris was free for a ride on Saturday afternoon, so we planned to ride if\u00c2\u00a0the weather wasn&#8217;t terrible.\u00c2\u00a0 Jeff checked the radar in the morning, and it had been rainy all night on the Eastern half of Oahu, so <em>Ditch<\/em> was out.\u00c2\u00a0 We met up at <em>Wailuna<\/em> at 14:30 and rode up the heinous hill of death.\u00c2\u00a0 If there was one thing I learned biking\u00c2\u00a0in Whistler, it was not to fight the hill in mid-ring and to conserve energy in granny.\u00c2\u00a0 It was sunny and breezy, and I reached the top of the road fairly fresh.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0The legs were reasonably OK, but\u00c2\u00a0the lungs and heart were feeling it a little, and the ass was feeling it a lot.\u00c2\u00a0<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/v\/Fooligans\/20070929\/DSCF0344.JPG.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" align=\"right\" width=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/d\/23851-2\/DSCF0344.JPG\" height=\"150\" style=\"width: 150px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>Up the water tank road and onto the dirt,\u00c2\u00a0the ground was initially dry, but after the eucalyptus corner, we began to see signs of moisture.\u00c2\u00a0 The further we climbed, the wetter it got.\u00c2\u00a0 The exposed clay was slick, and the parts of the trail that were either grassy or covered by fallen leaves were soupy.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0Many of the steep but otherwise rideable climbs weren&#8217;t, and the normal push-ups were slick mud.\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/d\/23921-1\/DSCF0374b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" align=\"left\" width=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/d\/23923-2\/DSCF0374b.jpg\" height=\"150\" style=\"width: 150px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a>The top was soggy and the bypass trails was a slurry of mud and rotten guavas.\u00c2\u00a0 The descent was sketchy with slick roots and muddy patches.\u00c2\u00a0 I outriggered the groove drop, but decided that some of the rooty drops and the slick clay roll-in were out of the question considering the conditions.\u00c2\u00a0 Out onto the doubletrack, we\u00c2\u00a0dropped onto <em>lower paperbark<\/em> and followed the singletrack down to the grassy field, crossing the road several times.\u00c2\u00a0 At the dirt kicker jump, Root, Chris, &amp; I dropped into a chute into the ironwoods and found a rickety stunt built from pallets.\u00c2\u00a0 Following the line down, we ended up below the <em>moonscape<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 It took a few false turns, but we eventually found our way out through the airsoft field to the gate.\u00c2\u00a0 In the end,\u00c2\u00a0 I completely drained a measured 2-liters in my hydration pack, and the however-many-mililiters of Cytomax in my frame bottle.<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/d\/23945-1\/DSCF0382b.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"150\" src=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/d\/23947-2\/DSCF0382b.jpg\" height=\"150\" style=\"width: 150px; height: 150px\" \/><\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.studionewmedia.com\/gallery\/d\/23945-1\/DSCF0382b.jpg\"> <\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00c2\u00a0D = 8.24-miles, Vavr = 5.6 mph, Vmax = 32 mph (road), T = 1-hour, 27-minutes actual riding (trail time around 3-hours)\u00c2\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>P.S.
