\"Coedo_shikkoku_back\"<\/a>\"Coedo_shikkoku_front\"<\/a>I guess I’ll fill in the fourth offering from Saitama’s Coedo Brewery<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0– the Shikkoku dark lager.\u00c2\u00a0 The name uses the kanji<\/em> for “laquer” and “black”, forming the compound “jet black”, and as is fitting to this name, this\u00c2\u00a0dunkel pours an almost opaque dark brown with a moderate but transient head.\u00c2\u00a0 Although the head becomes filmy, the carbonation remains constant\u00c2\u00a0throughout\u00c2\u00a0the beer’s\u00c2\u00a0existence in the glass.\u00c2\u00a0 This carbonation, along with the almost completely attenuated decoction gives this dark beer a dry bitterness with little detectable sweetness.\u00c2\u00a0 The initial flavor is bitter from the noble hops combined\u00c2\u00a0with\u00c2\u00a0the smokiness from the darkly roasted malt.\u00c2\u00a0 The two flavors dominate throughout, masking any cereal-malt flavor that may be there.\u00c2\u00a0\u00c2\u00a0 The\u00c2\u00a0aroma\u00c2\u00a0 is actually rich and warm, belying the almost two-dimentional quality of the flavor.\u00c2\u00a0 Don’t get me wrong here – I like<\/em> this beer – it’s just not a very complex mouth experience.<\/p>\n
