Seriously?\u00c2\u00a0 Flat off the start.\u00c2\u00a0 Is something wrong with her legs?\u00c2\u00a0 She\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s sitting in a golden throne\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00c2\u00a0 Oh, wait, she stood up.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh man, that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s so off key!\u00c2\u00a0 She\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s got some major <em>Kakaa<\/em> (grandma) armpit-fat going on there.\u00c2\u00a0 Looks like she forgot how to smile too.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sexy Zone<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Who are these guys?\u00c2\u00a0 Some new boy band I guess.\u00c2\u00a0 OK, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard their xmas song on KORL.\u00c2\u00a0 They seem to be on key, but they may be just lip-synching.\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like multi-colored bishonen sentai now\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/li>\n<li><strong>NMB48<\/strong> &#8211; Yay!\u00c2\u00a0 The Osaka Namba 48 group!\u00c2\u00a0 From the silver disco boots, I sense a costume change in the future.\u00c2\u00a0 Are they lip-synching?\u00c2\u00a0 It sounds too close to the recoded version to be live\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 unless they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re that good!\u00c2\u00a0 Dammit!\u00c2\u00a0 Where&#8217;s my costume change?!?!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hosokawa Takashi<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Whoa, they just flowed into Hosokawa\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <em>Nani wa Buji dayo Jinsei wa<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 As forceful as expected.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tokunaga Hideaki<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Breathless alto 80\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s flashback pop?\u00c2\u00a0 He had a few bobbles in pitch and his voice cracked a couple times, but a good live performance, despite the material.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kouzai Kaori<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c As expected, a solid <em>enka<\/em> performance with great dynamic range and effortless pitch range.\u00c2\u00a0 She did puff the mic once though.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Gou Hiromi<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s still going at it.\u00c2\u00a0 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s still got the range, but it doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t seem like he has the power and projection that he had before.\u00c2\u00a0 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ll still be dandy when he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 80!<\/li>\n<li><strong>E-girls<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c With a name like that, they could be a K-pop group.\u00c2\u00a0 OK, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard the songs in this medly on KORL.\u00c2\u00a0 Not terrible.\u00c2\u00a0 They didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get the pitch perfect on everything, but they did it live \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I give them credit for that.\u00c2\u00a0 They\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re apparently from the <em>EXILE<\/em> producers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sandaime J Soul Brothers<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c A touch flat here and there, but a decent live performance.\u00c2\u00a0 This is what the K-pop boy bands should aspire to approach.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Godai Natsuko<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Enka with tremolo to spare.\u00c2\u00a0 Her voice remains rich and refined.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AAA (Triple A)<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m not expecting much from them considering their performances in past years.\u00c2\u00a0 I guess the bad thing about the song they performed being so popular is I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve heard it over and over on KORL so much that all the off-key parts on their live performance stand out all the more.\u00c2\u00a0 The guys are not that bad, but the two girls are super flat (vocally, dammit!) and lack power\u00c2\u00a0and projection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fukuda Kouhei<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c A young enka artist making an impressive Kohaku debut.\u00c2\u00a0 Very clean vocal style.\u00c2\u00a0 I look forward to hearing more from him in the future.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fuji Ayako<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Already a Kohaku staple with 18 previous performances, Fuji continues with another flawless enka performance.\u00c2\u00a0 Her single backup dancer looked like she was doing hula in a formal kimono!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sakanaction<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Another pop staple on KORL with their signature airy techno-style.\u00c2\u00a0 Luckily most of the instrumental stuff is programmed so they can concentrate on the vocals.\u00c2\u00a0 They weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t perfect, but they did it live.<\/li>\n<li><strong>miwa<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Though this is her first Kohaku performance, miwa has already garnered a lot of popular and critical attention for her vocal and songwriting abilities.\u00c2\u00a0 Her live performance was excellent.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pornografitti<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Whoa, how old are these guys already?\u00c2\u00a0 OK, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re not dried up zombie mummies like the Stones or Aerosmith, but this is like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153fat old uncle rock\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 They were a more on key this year, but the song wasn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t that challenging \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it almost sounded \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<em>Golden Bomber<\/em> easy\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Fight, <em>Kumamon<\/em>, fight!\u00c2\u00a0 WTF is that yellow thing?<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tendou Yoshimi<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c One of the enka staples on the Kohaku reminds us why she is invited to return yearly.\u00c2\u00a0 She probably doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t need the mic with her projection.\u00c2\u00a0 Her costume this year was almost <em>Mikawa Kenichi<\/em>-worthy and looked somewhere between Kannon and Imelda Marcos\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 OK, sorry, that didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t sound good.<\/li>\n<li><strong>LINKED HORIZON<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Goofy performance of the <em>Shingeki no Kyojin<\/em> theme song.\u00c2\u00a0 They had backdancers in the show\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s military uniforms, but none dressed like Titans. Weak!<\/li>\n<li><strong>TMR and Mizuki Nana<\/strong> &#8211; Their performance was pitch perfect, but the songs were lame and full of overly melodramatic emphasis.\u00c2\u00a0 Good job with terrible material.<\/li>\n<li><strong>SKE48<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Oh! It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like watching rainbows and cherry blossoms come to life!\u00c2\u00a0 Megane!\u00c2\u00a0 Sweet!\u00c2\u00a0 Not sure if they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re doing this live, but it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s so wonderful!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mori Shinichi<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c They just rolled into his one-man stage.\u00c2\u00a0 He was less breathless this year performing his 1974 classic signature <em>Erimo-misaki<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Excellent.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m really glad I got to see him perform it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sakamoto Fuyumi<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The lady really likes boys!\u00c2\u00a0 This year it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s her latest single <em>Otoko no Himatsuri<\/em>, complete with taiko and those white matsuri shorts on the backdancers.\u00c2\u00a0 She brings it again with her\u00c2\u00a0throaty roar.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kobukuro<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Oh, these guys again.\u00c2\u00a0 Guitar guy was flat yet again.\u00c2\u00a0 Glasses guy was fine.\u00c2\u00a0 Is that Zamfir and his flute in the background?\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like the Andes!<\/li>\n<li><strong>EXILE<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Whoa!\u00c2\u00a0 Scintillating iridescent LED jackets!\u00c2\u00a0 It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s still only the two guys singing.\u00c2\u00a0 They are actually doing it live, except the backing vocal track.\u00c2\u00a0 They are spot on key.\u00c2\u00a0 An excellent performance, though I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t really like their stuff,<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Full cast performance of <em>Hana Hasaku<\/em> for the kids in Tohoku led by <strong>Ayase Haruka<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Momoiro Clover Z<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Oh man, WTF.\u00c2\u00a0 The theme of the costumes is supposed to be Kinkakuji\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 they look like gilded Buddhist statues come to life.\u00c2\u00a0 They are as off-key, strained, and weak as usual.\u00c2\u00a0 This time though the costumes make them less appealing.\u00c2\u00a0 There are these big disks behind their heads that have some kind of programmable radial display, but they are weak.\u00c2\u00a0 OK, they took off the golden costumes and are back to the normal colorful frills.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Golden Bomber<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Whee.\u00c2\u00a0 Same old song &#8211; different costumes.\u00c2\u00a0 Why are they back?\u00c2\u00a0 Really.<\/li>\n<li><strong>aiko<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Clear vocals, but just slightly flat.\u00c2\u00a0 Sad though.\u00c2\u00a0 She dances slightly better than <em>Iida Kaori<\/em> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c she can run in circles.\u00c2\u00a0 Horrible shoes.\u00c2\u00a0 Furry high-top sneakers?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hikawa Kiyoshi<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The Prince of enka is back in form this year.\u00c2\u00a0 Last year\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s performance was a let-down, but he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s redeemed himself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nishino Kana<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c An excellent live performance of her current <em>Sayonara<\/em> single.\u00c2\u00a0 A flat note here and there, but considering the octave changes required for this song, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s not bad.<\/li>\n<li><strong>TOKIO<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Whoa!\u00c2\u00a0 Another case of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153fat old uncle rock\u00e2\u20ac\u009d.\u00c2\u00a0 Everyone except maybe the drummer has chubbed out, especially obvious since they intercut footage from their past performances.\u00c2\u00a0 A decent live performance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Wada Akiko<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c The Kohaku wouldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t be the same without her.\u00c2\u00a0 She was a lot better this year than last.\u00c2\u00a0 The song was about as vocally challenging as last year, and she managed to hit the notes much better.\u00c2\u00a0 Osaka\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tallest enka singer is back!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Amachan<\/em> asadora special featuring <em>Shiosai no Memory<\/em> theme song and the\u00c2\u00a0drama cast.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>DREAMS COME TRUE<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Satellite live from Rikuzentakata, Iwate.\u00c2\u00a0 The choral backing vocalists save this one.\u00c2\u00a0 Yoshida\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s voice cracks regularly, but she isn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t singing at high volumes, so she doesn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have to shout and scream as much, though she does a couple of disracting shrieks to the audience that ruin the overall professionalism of the performance.\u00c2\u00a0 Probably one of their better Kohaku performances, though I still really don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t care for them at all.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kanjyani 8<\/strong> &#8211; These guys are the \u00e2\u20ac\u0153anti-SMAP\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, in that all of them can sing.\u00c2\u00a0 I guess <em>Johnny\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/em> learned something after <em>Nakai<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Their material and image sucks, but they can hold a note.\u00c2\u00a0 The guy with the big forehead gets a little close to cracking and going off-key, but manages to hold it together.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Kyari Pamyu Pamyu<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Yay!\u00c2\u00a0 Cute and painfully weird!\u00c2\u00a0 A tone-perfect live performance!\u00c2\u00a0 Mmm\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 cupcakes\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6<\/li>\n<li><strong>Itsuki Hiroshi<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Itsuki\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s lilting tribute to Hakata, Fukuoka backed up by HKT48!\u00c2\u00a0 I want his job!\u00c2\u00a0 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s one of the enka singers that I can identify by voice, believe it or not.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Perfume<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Oh, their stage \u00e2\u20ac\u0153speaking\u00e2\u20ac\u009d voices are way too high, plus their speech mannerisms are starting to turn obasan-like, so it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s like listening to the neighbor lady trying to speak like a kindergartener.\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, they stopped talking and are on stage performing.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m kind-of thinking that was lip-synched\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 though it was still mesmerizing!\u00c2\u00a0 Uuuu\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00c2\u00a0 They have stayed in character all these years, even down to the costume variations.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Yuzu<\/strong> &#8211; They were doing very good until the parts where they belt it out in the chorus, then they slipped out of key.\u00c2\u00a0 There\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s those darned pan flutes again!\u00c2\u00a0 I hope that goes away by next year.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mizumori Kaori<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c She\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s inherited the <em>Mikawa Kenichi<\/em> stage elevator!\u00c2\u00a0 Whoa!\u00c2\u00a0 Not only is she now 10-meters in the air, but the back of her dress is spread out behind her like a peacock tail!\u00c2\u00a0 The visuals were so outlandish, it almost made me forget to pay attention to her performance.\u00c2\u00a0 Another one of the young new crop of enka singers, her technically perfect performance would be worthy of any of the established stars like <em>Kobayashi Sachiko<\/em>, <em>Wada Akiko<\/em>, or <em>Tendou Yoshimi<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Wonderful!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Arashi<\/strong>\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <em>Furusato<\/em> with the kids on Minamidaitou-jima.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Ishikawa Sayuri<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Performing her eponymous 1977 <em>Tsugaru-kaikyou Fuyugeshiki<\/em> as tribute to her close friend, the late <em>Shimakura Chiyoko<\/em> who passed away from liver cancer in November.\u00c2\u00a0 Hey!\u00c2\u00a0 I didn&#8217;t say anything about her mole this time!\u00c2\u00a0 Wait&#8230;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Miwa Akihiro<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Infamous yellow-wigged (yellow, not blonde!) Shouwa-era drag queen performing his signature <em>Furusato no Sora no Shita<\/em> (<em>Yoitomake no Uta<\/em>) in the requisite costume and pinpoint stage light.\u00c2\u00a0 Google him, and his even more controversial buddy <em>Mishima Yukio<\/em> while you\u00e2\u20ac\u2122re at it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>AKB48<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Pitch perfect and entrancing, but the hideous \u00e2\u20ac\u0153<em>It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a Small World<\/em>\u00e2\u20ac\u009d faux-international\/ethnic-themed costumes suck goat scrote!\u00c2\u00a0 Okay, they\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve yanked off those to reveal more expected, but still unattractive costumes for their second song.\u00c2\u00a0 Wait, what?\u00c2\u00a0 <em>Oshima Yuko<\/em> says she\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s graduating?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Fukuyama Masahiro<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Weird.\u00c2\u00a0 Live from Taiwan?\u00c2\u00a0 I think I know what song he\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s going to sing and I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m going to hate it.\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m sure <em>TarepandaHI<\/em> is enjoying this though.\u00c2\u00a0 Wait for it\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 Oh, it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a medly.\u00c2\u00a0 Oh F \u00e2\u20ac\u201c there it is!\u00c2\u00a0 <em>Tanjyoubi ni wa Mashiro na Yuri wo<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 I don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t know what specifically I hate about this song \u00e2\u20ac\u201c it\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s got so much going for it!\u00c2\u00a0 Melodramatic low note tremelo!\u00c2\u00a0 Pan flutes!\u00c2\u00a0 Noooo!\u00c2\u00a0 Hiroki don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t want!<\/li>\n<li><strong>Izumiya Shigeru<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c 1970\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s folk singer.\u00c2\u00a0 He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s been an influential individual in many aspects of the entertainment industry, but not having grown up hearing about him, I just don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ikimonogakari<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c Wow.\u00c2\u00a0 <em>Yoshioka<\/em> really pulled it together this year!\u00c2\u00a0 I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m impressed how on-key she is.\u00c2\u00a0 Probably their best live performance.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Arashi<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c On key, but I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m thinking this is lip-synched.\u00c2\u00a0 They get a special and a two-song medly?\u00c2\u00a0 Whose\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6 oh never mind.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Matsuda Seiko and Chris Hart<\/strong> \u00e2\u20ac\u201c I know they charted this year, but ugh.\u00c2\u00a0 I would rather have seen some tangible talent like <em>Superfly<\/em> or <em>Saitou Kazuyoshi<\/em>.\u00c2\u00a0 Hart is on key and his Nihongo pronounciation is surprisingly good.\u00c2\u00a0 Matsuda is flat and pitchy.\u00c2\u00a0 Both of them puff the mic too much.
